Thailand develops Asian cannabis strain Issara

Thailand has developed its own cannabis strain. Researchers from the Maejo University in Chiang Mai announced that they had successfully bred a new cannabis strain as part of the country’s fledgling medical marijuana program.

The new strain called Issara 01, which comes from the Thai word for ‘freedom’, boasts equal levels of THC and CBD.

The cannabis cultivation centre at Maejo University is Thailand’s largest and has over 3,000 acres of land with around 12,000 medical cannabis plants. It’s expected that they could create around 2.6 tonnes of dried flower. At the moment, Thailand’s medical marijuana is dispensed as a thick, raw oil. However, if the medical program proves successful the government will soon bring out home grows.

“These are historic first steps on the path towards allowing people to grow six cannabis trees in their homes,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul. “The university will be a centre where ordinary people can learn how to plant and grow good quality cannabis.”
